ECycle WashingtonAt NorthwestDataNetworks we are frequently asked by our clients how to dispose of tech equipment properly.  We all know that computers, monitors, printers, hard drives etc are filling up our landfills and there has to be a better way.  Currently 112,000 computers and 55,0000 TVs reach the end of their life every day in the U.S. What a lot of people don’t realize is that in Oregon and Washington, it’s actually prohibited in many areas to throw away these types of items without recycling them.

Great news.  Both Oregon and Washington offer an E-Cycle program FOR FREE.  But even better than that, you can also get your equipment re-used by donating it to a non-profit like FREE GEEK

Free Geek

Free Geek refurbishes older technology to provide computers, education and job skills to those in need in exchange for community service.  They teach needy people how to better use technology, and when possible, send them home with a modest rebuilt computer to improve and enrich their lives.  Giving your old tech to Free Geek is a great way to make the most out of technology that no longer fits your needs.  We highly recommend.

Washington:

The Washington State E-Cycle program disassembles the electronics it receives and sends the individual components off to be recycled right here in the state.  Only 2% of the total volume ends up going to the dump, so we’re looking at 98% recycle-ability of these items.  The Washington State program accepts:

  • televisions
  • computers
  • computer monitors
  • portable or laptop computers including “tablet computers”
  • e-readers (also called e-book readers)

One place that accepts electronics for this program in Vancouver, WA is:

Central Transfer and Recycling Center
11034 NE 117th Ave.
Vancouver, WA

One Word of Warning

Before disposing of ANY technology whether to recyclers, or reusers like Free Geek, you need to make SURE that your data is wiped.  You do not want your sensitive info put in anyone else’s hands but yours.  We can securely wipe your data using the same standards that the Department of Defense uses, or your next best bet is to remove your hard drives yourself.

Northwest Data Networks encourages you to help save our environment through the above methods, but make sure your data is secure.  Give us a Call if you need help today.
